At the beginning of the year, we had big plans for events and activities to host at Saints around the Christmas period. But as has been the story for so many during the rest of this challenging year, we had to adapt. We have seen how Coronavirus has wreaked havoc in the lives of many, and we decided to do what we could to spread a little joy!

The Saints Christmas Markets

On Saturday 5th and 12th of December, we ran the Saints Christmas Market events, in a bid to support all of the incredible Nuneaton local businesses and creatives who have suffered massive loss in business during the pandemic.

Alara Bistro offered festive hot drinks and huge pork/turkey and stuffing batches to takeaway, Christmas music played over the speakers and there was a cheery atmosphere as people wandered and browsed the wide variety of stalls. Offerings included handmade soaps, haberdashery items, willow woven gifts, handmade Christmas decorations, cards and prints, wrapped sweet cones with encouraging messages, fairtrade items, scented candles and wax melts.

The café was transformed into a market area, to allow for plenty of space for socially distancing, with a one way system in place and masks worn in the building to help make sure the event could be enjoyed safely. A steady flow of people came across both events, and we were thrilled to see people coming out and shopping local.

Nativity Characters Giveaways

One of the newer things which has developed particularly in recent months is our food hamper giveaways, which are in partnership with the ‘Your Farmer’ organisation. We have been so grateful to receive grants, and the support of the council, to provide food for families who have been adversely impacted by the pandemic.

On Saturday 19th we hit the town dressed as Nativity Characters to hand out children’s activity and treat bags, as well as vouchers to be redeemed for Christmas food hampers at Saints to anyone who was facing hardship this Christmas. We will continue to offer hampers to those in need in the days before Christmas, including providing hampers for families living in emergency accommodation, and running another giveaway for low income families

We have all experienced an unprecedented year, and Christmas is a season of kindness, giving and most importantly hope. We encourage you to reach out to others - maybe call that older relative that might be feeling lonely, or send a card to your neighbour with good wishes for the New Year. Coronavirus has been devastating, but has brought out a stronger sense of community in many, so this Christmas let’s carry the message of hope to anyone who needs lifting up.

From all of us at Saints, we wish you a Merry Christmas, and a Hope-filled new year.
